The film had a miserable run during its first run but it caught people’s attention when it was released on OTT.It attained cult status and that status is currently being witnessed as despite being available on the OTT platform people are showing up in big numbers to watch the film on the big screen. The film minted Rs 24.50 crore in two weeks of its re-release. On its third Friday the film earned Rs 55 lakh which was a major drop from its Thursday collection of Rs 90 lakh, but on Saturday the showed a major spike and minted Rs 95 lakh, thus taking the overall collection of the film to Rs 26 crore ( re-release collection) and overall collection to Rs 39.5 crore.
Actor-producer Sohum Shah has announced a sequel to the film, but director Rahi Anil Barve has stepped aside as he’s busy with other projects like Gulkanda Tales starring Pankaj Tripathi, Kunal Kemmu, and Abhishek Banerjee, produced by Raj and DK. Additionally, he recently revealed his next project, Rakht Brahmand, which reportedly features Aditya Roy Kapur, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi, also produced by Raj and DK.
‘Tumbbad’ is based on a story Rahi Anil Barve’s friend had told him back in 1993 which was written by Marathi writer Narayan Dharap. The film went through a lot of struggles to get made to finally releasing in 2018.
