For the past few days, Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri starrer ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’ have not been in the news for the best reasons. The recently-released trailer has received a lot of praise from viewers. A plagiarism allegation has landed the movie in trouble. For those who are unaware, producer Sanjay Tiwari has charged director Raaj Shaandilyaa of VVKWWV with stealing a film concept he registered for back in 2015.
At a press conference that he recently conducted, Tiwari discussed possible legal action, registering the idea for his film months before Shaandilyaa, and the plagiarism controversy.
Producer Sanjay Tiwari accused writer-director Raaj Shaandilyaa publicly a few days ago of stealing his idea for the upcoming ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’, which stars Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri. Tiwari raised concerns regarding intellectual property and creative rights during the press conference when he said that the film’s concept closely resembled an original idea he had previously registered.
The notion or concept “Sex Hai Toh Life Hai…?”, registered by Gulbanu Khan in 2015, lies at the centre of the dispute. According to Tiwari, Shaandilyaa and his team lifted the main idea from this original work. Raaj Shaandilyaa’s team defended themselves by pointing out that they filed their own concept in October 2015 and named it ‘Uthal-Poothal’, attributing it to Raaj and Yusuf Ali Khan.
Nevertheless, Tiwari refuted this claim at the press conference. He shared, “On 27th October 2015, Yusuf and the team had registered their idea as ‘Uthal-Poothal,’ but I had mine registered on 28th August 2015, a full two months earlier.” He added. “The idea is the most crucial element. Once it’s there, you can spin a script or screenplay around it, but copying the original idea without permission is a serious issue.”
“I have been in this industry for 20 years, and I hope Raaj investigates his team. I am certain we have plenty of common people,” said Tiwari, emphasizing his long-standing presence in the industry. We have a good number of common folks. He was disappointed that it seemed that his creative effort had been taken without giving due credit.
When questioned about potential legal action, Tiwari revealed, “I will consider moving to the High Court to ban the film if necessary, but I don’t want to cause harm to anyone. This is about one person copying an idea, but filmmaking involves hard work from many.” He indicated that he is awaiting a response from Raaj’s legal team and hopes for an urgent resolution to the matter.
“I will consider moving to the High Court to ban the film if necessary, but I don’t want to cause harm to anyone,” Tiwari said in response to a query regarding possible legal action. This is about one individual stealing an idea, but making a film requires a lot of labor from many others. He said he hopes for a quick resolution to the situation and is awaiting word from Raaj’s legal team.
This isn’t the first time Raaj has been accused of copying ideas. The movie director was previously accused of copying Dream Girl and Janhit Mein Jaari. Along with facing significant charges, he also had a police case.
Tiwari also talked about his contacts with the Screenwriters Association (SWA) in relation to the alleged theft of his creative property. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the SWA’s procedures, calling them antiquated and inefficient for resolving such conflicts. “I approached them, but I was told to wait until after the film’s release to evaluate the situation,” he clarifies. He further added,“Despite having a massive membership, their work culture is beyond deplorable in this digital age.”
In an area where competition is fierce, Sanjay Tiwari’s persistence on safeguarding his original work emphasizes how important it is to respect intellectual property.
