Vikrant Massey: 'Pehle mujhe lagta tha Hindu aur Muslim khatre mei hain, ab mujhe nahi lagta'

Vikrant Massey, who is riding high on the success of 12th Fail, is set to return to the screen with The Sabarmati Report, portraying a journalist on a quest to unearth the truth behind the 2002 Godhra incident. The actor, known for choosing impactful roles, recently addressed the criticism he’s received over his perceived secular views associated with the project.
In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, Vikrant shared his take on secularism, emphasizing that “a truly secular person stands by others regardless of religion, caste, or background.” Reflecting on the polarized environment of social media, he stated that his beliefs have not wavered, describing himself as a liberal who values inclusivity over extremes.
When discussing his perspective, Vikrant defined secularism as “living together and respecting each other’s culture while taking pride in your own,” advocating for an understanding that transcends simplistic labels. His approach, he said, is to accept others genuinely without putting them down.

The actor also spoke about his family’s unique blend of diversity, mentioning, “My parents had an inter-caste marriage, so did I. My brother even converted to another religion. What could be more secular than that?” In the same conversation, he added, “Pehle mujhe lagta tha Hindu khatre mei hain, ab mujhe nahi lagta Hindu khatre mein hai; pehle mujhe lagta tha Muslim khatre mei hain, ab mujhe nahi lagta Muslim khatre mein hai.”

Directed by Ranjan Chandel, The Sabarmati Report features Raashi Khanna and Ridhi Dogra, with backing from producers Shobha Kapoor, Amul V. Mohan, Ektaa R. Kapoor, and Anshul Mohan. With its release on November 15, the film is already generating interest for its thought-provoking themes and Vikrant’s dedication to nuanced storytelling.
