There are some movies in Hindi cinema which will forever be iconic – some for their story or the way they were received, some for their casting. One such film is ‘Shakti’ as it got together two legends – Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. The film released in 1982 and Bachchan was offered it by Ramesh Sippy, right after the success of ‘Sholay’. But did you know that Bachchan had refused to be a part of the film.
When Sippy narrated the script to Bachchan, he loved it.However, when Big B asked the director who will play the father’s role, Ramesh Sippy said Dilip Kumar would be playing the role. That’s when he said no for the movie because he thought, he would not be able to work with such a great artist. When Dilip Kumar got to know about this, he called Bachchan and told him, “Amit, don’t say no to this film. I want to do a film with you and learn a lot from you.”
On hearing this, Big B got emotional and had moist eyes. He couldn’t say no to the film after this. Earlier, in an interview Bachchan had said that he forgets his dialogues as soon as he looks into Dilip Kumar’s eyes.
‘Shakti’ also starred Rakee, Smita Patil along with Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. The film went on to become a huge success at the box office and also got a lot of awards. Another trivia of the movie is that Rakhee was warned by people to not play Bachchan’s mother in the movie. They have played romantic leads in many movies like, ‘Kabhie Kabhie’. However, she did not care as she was delighted at the opportunity to play Dilip Kumar’s wife in the film.
