Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s journey to becoming a leading man took a dramatic turn on the sets of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘. In a recent interview, the actor reminisced about his collaboration with director Anurag Kashyap, the maverick filmmaker known for pushing boundaries.
This introduction sets the stage for the story by highlighting the significance of the film and director for Siddiqui’s career, while also intriguing the reader with the mention of a stern “dressing down” he received on the first day.
During an appearance on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Nawaz mentioned that he decided to do the film after reading just a short plot summary. He said, “I wanted to give it my all. Slowly, I started behaving like Al Pacino. The first day of shoot, I was full of Al Pacino. Full on. That’s how I was behaving.”
Later that evening, at their small hotel in Varanasi, Anurag pulled Nawaz aside for a private chat. Nawaz stated, Anurag said, Yeh kya kar raha hai tu? Tu pagal hai kya? Kis tarah se kar raha hai tu? Overacting kyu kar raha hai? (What in the world are you doing? How are you playing it? Have you lost your mind, why are you overacting)?’”
Nawaz said that he was deeply embarrassed, “Maine sar pakad liya(I grabbed my head),” he said, and disclosed that they had to reshoot the entire day. “I did away with the power that I was showing completely.”
The two-part Gangs of Wasseypur not only launched Nawaz’s career as a leading actor but also brought attention to other talented performers in the industry.
Anurag recently praised Nawaz’s skills, noting that despite his physical appearance, the industry tends to stereotype him.
Anurag also mentioned how Nawaz supported him during his mental health struggles in recent years. In an interview with the Indian Express, Nawaz clarified that while they aren’t close friends, he holds a special place in his heart for Anurag.
