Despite being the son of a filmmaker, Govinda did not experience a luxurious upbringing. His father, Arun Kumar Ahuja, was an actor who later turned to filmmaking. However, after a film failure in the 1950s, the family faced financial hardship. Producers at the time invested personal funds, even mortgaging homes and properties, which led Govinda’s family to relocate from Bandra to Virar, where Govinda was born.
In an earlier interview, Govinda revealed his humble beginnings, mentioning how he applied for regular 9-5 jobs before his acting career took off. He recalled a specific incident during a chat with Simi Grewal in the late 1990s where he shared that he once applied for a steward job at the Taj hotel but was rejected because of his inability to speak English confidently. Despite graduating in commerce, he struggled to secure a stable job and moved from office to office in search of employment.

Eventually, Govinda achieved great success as an actor. In another interview, Govinda’s brother Kirti recounted a moment when Govinda had accumulated so much wealth that he didn’t know how to manage it all. Kirti shared on the chat show Har Ghar Kucch Kehta Hai that Govinda once locked them in a room and presented all his money and bank documents. Initially, Govinda proposed investing in 100 auto-rickshaws, but Kirti advised against it, saying it wasn’t suitable for them. Later, when Govinda suggested buying 100 trucks, Kirti once again declined, pointing out it wasn’t their area of expertise.
Govinda was last seen in 2019’s ‘Rangeela Raja‘.
