In a past interview with Rediff, Govinda, famously known for his role in Hero No 1, shared his decision to step away from comedy to pursue more serious roles.He also voiced his frustration at frequently being nominated for Best Actor awards without winning, despite his films being major box-office hits.
Reflecting on his comedy films, Govinda noted that they were often dismissed as mere “time-pass entertainment” and labeled as B-grade despite their commercial success. He expressed frustration over being repeatedly nominated for Best Actor awards without winning and even noted the category eventually shifted to Best Actor in a Comic Role. Confronted with these challenges, he chose to shift his focus away from comedy.
Announcing his departure from comedy roles, he emphasized that future projects would need to offer fresh and innovative scripts to capture his interest. He expressed dissatisfaction with repetitive writing and stressed that, despite varying levels of success in his career, his track record remains strong. He believed it was the right moment to transition away from comedy to preserve his reputation.
Govinda shared his aspiration to engage in more meaningful cinema, emphasizing the need for a talented director and quality writing. He mentioned that he didn’t have a particular dream role in mind, as he preferred to allow others the opportunity to showcase their own strengths and creativity.
In the same interview, Govinda revealed that he initially turned to comedy as a break from the exhausting demands of serious roles. Finding comedy less taxing and beneficial for his health, he began taking on comedic roles, which surprisingly became massive hits. Despite this success, he felt that getting trapped in a repetitive comedy routine was unwise, leading him to decide to move on.
Interestingly, when asked about his favorite films, Govinda didn’t list any of his popular comedies. Instead, he mentioned Hatya and Swarg as his personal favorites. He noted that these films represented genuine filmmaking efforts where everyone was deeply involved. Reflecting on his career, he acknowledged that his taste and vision have evolved, expressing a desire to aim for even higher standards in the future.
