House of the Dragon season 2 is dishing out curveballs as it nears the end of its eight episodes. Spoiler ahead!
There are many characters in Fire & Blood, the book by George RR Martin that inspired House of the Dragon, that don’t appear in the television series. Daeron Targaryen is one of those characters; he was mentioned frequently in season 2, episode 6 ‘Smallfolk’, but has not been seen in the show as of yet. This is due to the fact that Dareon, who is supposed to be 16 years old at this point, is actually the fourth child of Alicent Hightower and the late Viserys Targaryen.
Just before Gwayne and Ser Criston left for combat at the Riverlands, Alicent inquired about her youngest son. It turns out that Daeron wasn’t under Aegon’s command when he was younger and was taken to Oldtown. As a result, he is still in the Hightower home base. “He’s stalwart. Clever. As adept with his lute as he is with his sword, and a feature in the fancies of many a young lady, I’d wager. He’s kind.” Gwayne says about Daeron. Alicent replies, “Kindness is a quality I’ve found lacking in his brothers.”
Season 2 of House of the Dragon most likely won’t feature Daeron. In an interview with Variety, Ryan Condal, the co-creator and showrunner of House of the Dragon, revealed that Daeron will not appear in season 2. “Daeron has not been cast yet. I’ve said he’s a character in the show, but at this point in the story, he’s in Oldtown where he was warded off as a young child. So we don’t have a point-of-view character in that world yet and there is no dramatic reason to go there.” He said. He added, “He will come to the narrative and have a role to play, just as he does in the book — we’re just not there yet in the storytelling.” So Daeron will most likely appear in season 3.
The teaser for the seventh episode of House of the Dragon reveals that Daeron has successfully become a dragonrider, with a dragon named Tessarion. According to Fire & Blood, Daeron eventually befriends Tessarion, the female dragon, learns to ride her, and goes on to play a significant role in the Dance of Dragons conflict. Daeron gets himself in his own succession drama involving Hugh Hightower after Rhaenyra dies, Aemond and Daemon quarrel, and Aegon goes missing when Rhaenyra takes King’s Landing and is thought to be dead. Just a few days after the war ends, Daeron passes away. The book doesn’t reveal how, but House of the Dragon has done a great job of providing viewers with precise details for situations that Fire & Blood left unclear, so we may find out why in the future of this series.
