Badrunissa (Alia Bhatti) is in a hopeless relationship with her unemployed boyfriend Hamza, (Vijay Varma). He gets a job as a Railways official to avoid appearing a loser in front her parents. Three years later, he is still a drunkard who continues to thrash his wife.

Blinded in love, Badru makes fun of Hamza to try to solve her problem. When she realizes that there isn’t one, she team up with Shefali Shah, her single Mother Rukhsar, and kidnaps Hamza. The ball is now in the ladies’ court, as they decide what to do next.

Darlings Movie Review: Script Analysis

Parveez Sheikh, Jasmeet’s co-writer, has also written the film. He should be celebrated for creating films such as Queen (cowriter), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (cowriter), Blackmail (writer), and many more. We know from his work that he can balance humor with other genres. He can keep the film’s main genre light, whether it is the drama of Queen, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, or the thrills of Blackmail.

It’s the way that Badru’s domestic violence gets ignored by a makeup artist in her building, who keeps preparing various brides to be or Shefali Shah singing “Duniya Sirf Twitter Walo ke liye bualti hai suhai sahab!” The film is full of interesting thoughts from the first scene until the credits roll. Do you think Alia Bhatt’s film promotes domestic violence? Darlings, please do watch it once before you get all woke.

There are some rough edges. Things get monotonous in the second part. By the end, expectations go through the roof and it becomes extremely difficult to reach the makers.

Darlings Movie Review: Star Performance

Alia Bhatt has once again proven why she isn’t hyped for show. On the latest season, she’s proving that every word about her is true. She has made Badru her own, from the accent to the physical toneality.

Vijay Varma, despite Alia’s stellar performance, remained the most fascinating element of the film for me. He is the artist in himself. His hatred for Hamza is so strong that he almost feels like he’s eating the same to improve himself. His artistic brilliance and the magic of the script are evident in the emotions he stirs up, from fear to the desire to kill him.

Shefali Shah is as fluid as butter, and flows with the story. Shefali ma’am does a wonderful job highlighting the emotional burden Rukhsar in disguise of her quirky nature. Roshan Mathew has chosen another character to showcase his talents after Choked. His comical use of his character in the second part is a highlight. Rajesh Sharma isn’t given much dialogue, but he still adds some substance to the role.

Darlings Movie Review: Direction, Music

Let’s stop and take in the fact that this is Jasmeet’s first film. HOW? How is it possible for someone to be so great that they remind you of Vishal Bhadraj’s debut? It is hard to imagine the idea that “let’s not only show domestic violence as it is, but also let’s have some fun with it” being discussed within the team. I can see many people becoming hesitant about doing the same. Jasmeet is not only a great debutant, but she also hits the target for those who are asking to boycott the event without even watching.

Prashant Pillai’s fascinating background score aside, the sound design of this film is what won me over. The sound design uses all external noises to create tension, starting with Vijay Varma banging on his tiffin while climbing up to play a guitar-riff in an important scene. Vishal Bhardwaj and Mellow D’s songs are perfect without any obstruction. Bhasad, a rap song, is to this film what Badla was for Blackmail.

Darlings Movie Review: The Final Word

Darlings is Bollywood’s closest thing to Andhadhun. This film is a true gem thanks to the tragedy mein humor’ approach. Alia Bhatt is ultimately the film’s heart.
