Despite receiving mixed reviews during the time of its release, ‘Tamasha‘ has gradually developed a cult following, with several of its scenes often making the rounds on social media as reels these days. Along with being a major milestone in the careers of all those involved, the film also marked a turning point for director Imtiaz Ali and stars Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Piyush Mishra, who all received high praise for their performances.
During a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Piyush took a trip down memory lane and revealed that they shot the highly regarded long scene, which features a conversation between his character and Ranbir towards the movie’s end, sixteen times. The actor also emphasised that he strictly followed the writer-director’s instructions and didn’t improvise in that intensely emotional sequence.
He shared “We performed it exactly how Imtiaz had written it (in the script). In fact, we did it 16 times. Those weren’t retakes though. That’s just Imtiaz Ali’s strange process. He doesn’t go for retakes.”
Piyush also shed light on how the sequence was shot. He further added, “(When shooting) Imtiaz will ask you to keep doing it and say that he will take whichever he likes. He trusted me and Ranbir and our rapport was also very good. We kept doing it and he finally included in the film the one he liked the most. But that speech was very long and detailed. It took us a lot of effort to do it exactly that way. Yet, it was great fun. It’s always fun working with Imtiaz Ali.”
Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Imtiaz Ali, Tamasha’s music was composed by AR Rahman. Apart from ‘Tamasha’, Piyush Mishra has also worked with Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Rockstar’ in 2011..
On the work front, Piyush Mishra was last seen in director Shankar’s ‘Indian 2’, starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role.
