Kangana Ranaut is preparing for the release of her new film, ‘Emergency,’ where she takes on both directing and acting roles. The film explores the highly controversial 21-month period from 1975 to 1977, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across India. This significant event had profound effects on the country’s democracy and remains a pivotal chapter in India’s post-independence history.
Kangana describes Emergency as more than just a retelling of historical events. She sees the film as an exploration of power and its tragic consequences, saying, ‘Her life was such a Shakespearean tragedy.’
In an interview with Variety, Kangana Ranaut spoke about Indira Gandhi, saying, “It’s not for us to judge or evaluate. It is what it is. When people see the film, they will realize that it is such an honest take on the Emergency, what led to it, and what eventually came of it.”
The film also shed light on the events after the Emergency, including the assassinations of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and her son Rajiv Gandhi in 1989. Both served as Prime Ministers of India, and their legacy still impacts the country’s politics. The Indian National Congress, their party, has been in opposition since 2014 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which Kangana is a member of, came to power.
However, with the sensitive subject and the Gandhi family being in opposition, Kangana is confident about the film’s reception. She noted that a ‘large team of historians’ who lived through the Emergency, including both supporters and critics of Indira Gandhi, helped ensure the film’s accuracy. The actress said, “Nobody can get offended by this kind of honesty,” highlighting the film’s balanced approach.
Kangana recently posted a new ‘Emergency’ poster on Instagram, announcing the trailer’s release date. The poster shows her as Indira Gandhi, with Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Vishwak Nair play Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Sanjay Gandhi, respectively.
The actress captioned the post, “Witness the Darkest Times of Democratic Indian History & the Lust for Power that Almost Burned Down the Nation! #EmergencyTrailer out on 14th August. The Explosive Saga of the Darkest Chapter of Indian Democracy #Emergency unfolds in cinemas worldwide on 6th September.”
