Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently reminisced about his collaboration with director Anurag Kashyap on ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘ and shared insights into their unique working relationship. While Nawaz revealed that he initially found the script of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ to be nonsensical, he also expressed how much he misses working with Kashyap.
He explained that the initial days of shooting didn’t happen due to financial difficulties. However, Kashyap’s improvisational skills came to the forefront during these challenges. In his interview with India Today, Nawazuddin described how Kashyap would write dialogues on the spot and direct scenes with minimal preparation.
Nawazuddin elaborated, “With great difficulty, only five dialogues were written for me, and Manoj Bajpayee had a few random lines. But when we went on the sets, Anurag ke andar ek jaanwar jaag gaya (A beast within Anurag was awakened). The way he started writing on the spot, with that story, the film was made. Anurag told us to go and sit near a pond. He made Huma (Qureshi) and me sit there, and we blabbered something I had said during the workshop, and that’s how the iconic scene was shot.”
He added that the next day, on a piece of paper, Anurag wrote a few more dialogues for four or five actors, showed them from far away, and called for action. “Because of Anurag, it became a habit for me to improvise on set,” the actor said.
When asked if he missed working with Kashyap, Nawazuddin mentioned that he always misses Anurag and cherishes their time working together. He praised Kashyap’s keen observational skills and his ability to bring out the best in his actors, describing their partnership as an “amazing team.”
