Sushant Singh Rajput death: Supreme Court rejects CBI plea against actor Rhea Chakraborty

Actress Rhea Chakraborty who has been in the spotlight for the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, has a reason to feel relieved. On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed the petitions filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the State of Maharashtra, and the Bureau of Immigration, which sought to challenge the Bombay High Court‘s decision to quash Look-out Circulars (LOCs) against her.
The ruling also brings relief to her brother, Showik, and her father, Lt Colonel Indrajit Chakraborty, an army veteran, as the apex court upheld the High Court’s decision in their favour.
Meanwhile, in February, the Bombay High Court cancelled the Look-out Circular issued by the CBI against Rhea Chakraborty, her brother, and her father following their petition.
The CBI later challenged this High Court decision in the Supreme Court. The look-out Circular had originally been issued as part of the CBI’s investigation into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
According to Live Law report, a bench of Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan remarked that the petition appeared frivolous and seemed to be filed solely because the accused were high-profile.
Justice Gavai cautioned the CBI counsel against filing what he described as a frivolous petition, suggesting it was submitted solely due to the high-profile nature of one of the accused. He added that both individuals involved had strong ties within the community. When the counsel requested to defer the matter, Justice Gavai hinted that if pressed, the court might consider imposing costs and offering some compliments to the CBI, as reported.
Previously, a bench of justices Revati Mohite Dere and Manjusha Deshpande allowed petitions filed by Rhea Chakraborty, her brother and their father against the LOCs issued against them that prevented them from travelling abroad.
For the unversed, the death of Sushant Singh Rajput at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020, stirred significant controversy and speculation, prompting investigations by multiple agencies, including the CBI and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
