Birth

Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in the city of Allahabad in the state of Uttar Pradesh. His father’s name was Motilal Nehru and mother’s name was Swaroop Rani Nehru. Nehru’s mother Swaroop Rani was the second wife of Motilal Nehru. His first wife had died due to labor pain. Motilal Nehru ji was a Kashmiri Pandit. He was a famous wealthy lawyer. Motilal ji has also been the President of Nehru Congress.

Education

Nehru’s early education was completed at home by private teachers. After this he was sent to London to get higher education. He received law education from Cambridge University. He lived in London for seven years.


Nehru’s Arrival in India

Jawaharlal Nehru returned to India in the year 1912. After coming to India, here he started practicing law in the Allahabad High Court. In the year 1916, he was married to “Kamla Nehru” ji. Nehru had a daughter, whose name was Indira Gandhi.


Nehru’s Political Life

In the year 1917, Nehru joined the “Home Rule League”. Jawaharlal Nehru ji met “Mahatma Gandhi” ji in the year 1919. At that time Gandhiji started his own campaign against Rowlatt Act.


Nehru was greatly influenced by Gandhiji’s ideas. Nehru got political knowledge from Mahatma Gandhi only. Nehru ji’s family was very much influenced by the civil disobedience movement run by Gandhi ji. Motilal Nehru had adopted Khadi environment by sacrificing his wealth. From 1920 to 1922, Gandhiji started the non-cooperation movement. In which Nehru ji played a very active role. Due to the movement, Nehru had gone to jail many times till now. In the year 1924, he was the chairman of Allahabad Municipal Corporation for two years. In the year 1926, he resigned from this post. From 1926 to 1928, he was the General Secretary of the All India Congress. Gandhiji understood the merit of Nehru. That is why he told his political experience to Nehru ji, from which Nehru ji continued to get benefits throughout his life.

Jawaharlal Nehru as President of Congress

In the year 1928-29, the annual session of Congress was organized under the chairmanship of Motilal Nehru. In this session, two factions were formed within the Congress. First of Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose and second faction of Motilal and other leaders. The first group demanded complete independence and the second group had demanded a sovereign state under the British government. When there was a contradiction between these two factions, Gandhiji found a middle ground and said that the British government should give statehood to India, otherwise the Congress would fight a national battle.


The English government did not give any answer to this. In the year 1929, in the Lahore session, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected the President of the Congress. Everyone passed the resolution demanding complete independence with one vote. On 26 January 1930, Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the national flag of independent India in Lahore.


In the year 1930, Gandhiji gave impetus to the Civil Disobedience Movement. Due to which the British Government was forced to take important decisions regarding India.


The British Government passed the Government of India Act 1935 in the year 1935. Under this rule, the Congress decided to contest the elections. Nehru ji was supporting the party from outside by not participating in the elections. The party formed its government in every state of India. Congress got the maximum number of seats.


In the year 1936-37, Jawaharlal Nehru was re-elected as the President of the Congress. Quit India Movement was started by Gandhiji in the year 1942. Nehru was arrested in this movement. He was released from prison in the year 1945. The year 1947 played an important role in the partition of India and Pakistan by negotiating with the government.

At the time of India’s independence in the year 1947, elections were held for the post of Prime Minister in the Congress. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Acharya Kriplani got the maximum votes, but at the behest of Gandhiji, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the first Prime Minister of India. Nehru ji held the post of Prime Minister for three consecutive times. While in office, he died of a heart attack.


History of Jawaharlal Nehru

Information about the history of Jawaharlal Nehru is obtained from the book and autobiography written by him. According to him, the name of Jawaharlal Nehru’s grandfather was Gangadhar Nehru. His grandfather was the Kotwal of Delhi during the Mughal period. In the year 1857, his grandfather’s family suffered a lot in the first freedom struggle of India. His house and property were completely destroyed. His grandfather came to Agra from Delhi at the same time and started living there. Three months before the birth of Motilal Nehru, his grandfather died at the age of 35. Before his death, he had married off his daughters to Kashmiri Pandits.


Gangadhar Nehru had three sons. There were Banshidhar Nehru, Nandlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru. Nandlal Nehru was a famous lawyer. He practiced law both at Kanpur and Allahabad. He had settled in Allahabad with his family. Motilal Nehru became a famous lawyer due to his inspiration.
