Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the former Prime Minister of India. Atal ji has made an important contribution to Indian politics. Due to which the Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged as a major party in India. Life Introduction

1. Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji was born on December 25, 1924 in a Brahmin family in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh, his father was Shri Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and mother’s name was Krishna Devi. Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji had three brothers and three sisters, the names of his brothers are Prem Bihari Vajpayee, Avadh Bihari Vajpayee, Suda Bihari Vajpayee and sisters are Vimala Mishra, Urmila Mishra and Kamala Devi.


2. He did the Victoria College of Gwalior which is currently known as Laxmibai College and K.D.A. Educated from V. College Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, his highest education is M.A. in Political Science. In the year 1993, Kanpur University honored him with an honorary degree of PhD in Philosophy.

Political Journey

1. Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji started his political career as a freedom fighter, Atal ji was very much influenced by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee ji, so he joined Shyama Prasad Mukherjee ji’s party Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS).


2. In the Bharatiya Jana Sangh Party, he was made the National Secretary of the Northern Region, for the first time from this party, in the year 1957, he contested his Lok Sabha elections from Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh and also won in it.


3. Impressed by the contribution of Atal ji, in the year 1968, he was made the National President of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.


4. In the year 1975, he participated in the movement started by Jai Prakash Narayan against the Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Mr. Indira Gandhi and made the movement a nationwide movement.


5. In the year 1977, his party Bharatiya Jana Sangh formed an alliance with the Janata Party to defeat the government of Indira Gandhi.


6. Under the leadership of Morarji Desai, his party won in the year 1977 and Atal ji was given the post of Foreign Minister, at the same time he gave his first speech abroad in Hindi language.


Formation of Bharatiya Janata Party

Atal ji formed the Bharatiya Janata Party in the year 1980 with the help of Lal Krishna Advani, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The Bharatiya Janata Party became the rival party of the Congress party in a very short time, due to which the Congress party had to face heavy losses.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister

1. In the year 1996, the Bharatiya Janata Party won and formed the government for the first time in the country. Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji was elected as the tenth Prime Minister of the country from the Bharatiya Janata Party, but due to political reasons, his government fell after 13 days and he resigned from his post.


2. Atal ji was sworn in as the Prime Minister in the National Democrat Alliance in the year 1998, after which he had to resign from his post in the year 1999 due to the breakdown of the National Democrat Alliance. This government lasted only for 13 months.


3. In the Lok Sabha elections held in the year 1999, the Democrat Alliance again won and Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected as the Prime Minister, who completed his term as a non-Congress leader for the first time in the history of India till the year 2004.


4. In the year 2004, the Bharatiya Janata Party was defeated in the Lok Sabha elections and the Congress formed the government, after which in the year 2005, he took retirement from politics and handed over the responsibility of the party to Lal Krishna Advani and Pramod Mahajan.


5.Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji passed away on 16 August 2018, 7 days of national mourning was kept for the multifaceted personality former Prime Minister, there are very few leaders in Indian politics, who selflessly gave their lives for the country.
